Ode to Friends Who Help Friends Just Because (And Who Do It Tirelessly)

We have two friends who are always ready to help,

Whenever they are needed.

Knowledgeable and direction oriented,

Their advice is always heeded.

They work tirelessly and endlessly,

Until the work is done.

And my trying to keep up with their amazing pace,

Is a battle I have not won.

“I like doing this,” Sue would always say,

Whenever I gave her praise,

For doing such a fast and thorough job.

And with tired arms, I’d raise,

A salute to this woman who ran circles around me,

And was forever rearranging,

The items to be seen,

That always needed changing.

Our multitudinous piles of ‘stuff

- to which we had been shackled -

For our great big moving sale,

which was what this woman tackled.

Twenty years of accumulations

Of things we thought we needed,

Just-in-case, or ‘wouldn’t that look nice’,

Are things now I hoped receded.

Sue and her crew worked hard and true,

Until the time soon came nigh

When doorman Dale said, ‘That’s the end!’

And we sat down with a great big sigh.

All were pleased with the turn-out,

But felt relieved that it was over.

Until we saw the piles of stuff not taken,

“Do we need a big Land Rover?”

Another daunting task was before us,

We all could clearly see,

“No worries!” said Sue and Dale,

“A charity auction there will be.”

The next day they pulled up to the back,

In an SUV in which to load

And another daunting task

Placing boxes and bins to behold,

For another sale at another time

Which made me weary just to think,

About all the work they’d need to do again...

I think I need a drink.

And so, with a glass of Tequila in hand

I want to make a salute:

To Sue and Dale, an amazing pair,

Whose friendship we cannot dispute,

Their work ethics and energy,

Which are never contentious,

And their sincerity and attitudes

Are never pretentious.

Our thanks to these two good friends

And wonderful folks

For all you have done and still do,

With no jokes.
