What Are New Year’s Resolutions?

A handwritten note nailed to a board saying 'Resolutions'

I saw a man running, early New Year’s Day.

I grinned at his determination,

to start his goals with intention,

But wondered if they would continue ‘til May.

The problems with resolutions are not the intent.

It’s when we let life get in the way

to slow down our resolve to pay

For those sins we fall back on to vent.

Stresses are the biggest culprits in life.

Especially when we try to live,

Outside our means that are bound to give

Us all we desire, but with strife.

Our gluttonous desires come in guises:

Food, drink, toys, and more,

Needing more space to store,

All we consume and buy when the bills become surprises.

Overweight, flabby bodies, bills galore.

We vow to rid ourselves of such,

The excesses we don’t need so much,`

And resolve to cut down on all we abhor.

But then we slip back to our nasty old habits.

Laziness sets in and desires takeover,

Bills become higher, our clothes barely   cover

That which we’d tried hard to lose, damn it!

There is a moral to making a New Year’s resolution,

That we make

And then break

Bringing on more mental pollution.

It’s a very simple answer, don’t you see,

Care about your mind and health,

And save your money to gain the wealth,

Then become more determined to be all you need to be.

I’m sending best wishes for a glorious New Year!

With all the determination of making it clear

That it’s up to you

To see things through,

So, let’s toast to feeling good cheer!
